My name is Vanessa and I am mum to 4 wonderful children. 3 boys and 1 girl.

My children are 14, 10, 4 and 2

My 10 year old son Nathanual was diagnosed last year with Asperger's and my 4 year old son Cody was diagnosed just over 2 years ago with Autism.

Cody does early intervention as well as spending sessions with a Speech therapist and occupational therapist. He also attends kindy 3 times a week with the help of a grant for extra teacher aid hours while he is there. He is getting ready to start prep next year with a duel enrollment. He will attend our local small school (of under 20 students) 3x a week and He will also attend the larger school in the next large town to continue an early intervention program 2x a week. I think this will give us the best of both worlds. He will also use the same visiting AVT, speech therapist and occupational therapist his brother uses while attending the local school.

Though both my boys have ASD, they just couldn't be more different. Nathanual tries to help with Cody but because he can't pick up on Cody's non verbal cues (as he doesn't understand facial expressions or body language) he tends to push him to far which leaves the two sparking against each other all the time. This of course sets off the oldest boy Lex who is very protective of Cody. This leaves my house feeling like a war zone some days.

Normally I cope quite well. I am very used to our life and enjoy it most of the time. I couldn't imagine my boys any other way and find them a pure blessing to my life. But lately I have felt so drained and tired. I think the isolation is starting to affect my ability to cope. I don't know any other parents with children with special needs never mind any with children with ASD. Nobody understands how I or my husband live. We cop a lot of slack for things that in our existence just not important. Such as the contents of Cody's lunch box during kindy (Cody has food sensitivities manly due to texture.) We do put a lot of crisp dry foods rather than soft sandwiches and fruit which he just wouldn't eat.

I wish people wouldn't be so judgmental and would give us a break. I wish we had a support group near by that we could talk with other parents going through the same things. I hope this forum can provide some of the support I feel I might be needing.

Thanks for reading my essay lol.
Vanessa

We'll do our best to help

Vaccinations have nothing to do with it
